The Open Coffee idea was born in London “to encourage entrepreneurs, developers and investors to organise real-world informal meetups to chat, network and grow.”

Started one year ago, and held on alternative Friday mornings, the Open Coffee Lisburn branch has proven to be a huge success, drawing in techies, bloggers, entrepreneurs and more. Most importantly this random, free and open networking group has, for a lot of us, created real-world friendships.

The openness and social nature of Open Coffee, compared to the strict regimented structure of other business networking groups, such as BNI means that we can try different things. So on Saturday 16 January, we’ll be having our first Open Coffee Lisburn outside of Lisburn, in Banbridge. “On Tour” as I like to call it, we’ll be meeting at 9:30AM in Starbucks at The Outlet. With most attendees being married and with kids, we encourage them to come along too, they won’t be alone.

If you’ve never been along to an Open Coffee meeting, this is the perfect opportunity to come along and meet the group.

You can contact us on twitter through http://twitter.com/oclisburn
The majority of us are on Google Wave and if you add me, I can invite you to the group – andrewgribben.com@googlewave.com
And finally, you can keep up with our events by subscribing to our iCal

A few weeks ago I started my own project and corresponding Facebook group for what soon became known as the Open Bible Project. The goal being to produce a version of the Scriptures for various e-book readers which, within the constraints of the device, has a useable user interface and readable layout.

Many, many versions already exist around the web, but either have hideously formatted text or are far too unwieldy to fit into typical usage patterns for the Bible. Of course others have been working on this problem, Osnova has produced several Bibles and developed a jump to verse technique using the search function of the device. Type ge.1.10 and find and the reader will jump to the Genesis chapter 1 verse 10.

I’ve used a similar technique, by hiding a code for chapter using white coloured text (doesn’t show on the device but is still searchable) you can enter Gen.1, Matt.1 etc and the reader leaps to the correct chapter. As far as the reading experience goes, each verse flow into one another, with verse numbers showing in a smaller font.

Very soon I’ll have an Open Bible Project website up and running, hosting the scriptures and various reference books online. Each user of the website will be able to annotate, highlight and link text across books of the Bible and the reference library. This customised version of the Bible will be available (freely) as a download for use on your reader, bringing those highlights, notes and links with it.

We’ve got our Google Wave invites and while we figure out what it actually does and wait for what comes next, all we really have is another method to communicate with each other, that we actually have to login to and check. Unlike email, twitter and facebook which we are being prompted about regularly and are in the habit of checking, whole conversations could be going on in wave that we won’t realise until we decide to give it another go next month and see what the fuss is all about. But now thanks to the Prowl iPhone app, we can have push notifications coming from the desktop wave <del datetime="2009-11-08T12:46:22+00:00">client</del> wrapper, Waveboard

Here’s the steps you’ll need to get started.

First off it’s really handy if you have a spare computer which you leave running, so you get notifications when you’re out.

You’ll need Growl for this to work

Prowl for iPhone and the Prowl plugin

In the Growl system prefs make sure that the default notification is set to Prowl

Visit http://www.getwaveboard.com and download the installer and let it do it’s thing (Mac Only)

Install and run Waveboard. At the moment it’s a wrapper for the website but with a few nice features added; hotkeys, status bar icon etc

What should happen is when you get a new wave, or an existing wave is updated, Waveboard will send the notification to Growl which in turn will Push out the Prowl app on your trusty iPhone and look like this:

Waveboard also offer an iPhone app which can be launched from the Prowl notification, it’s £0.59 and is’nt much more than a wrapper, although I’m sure it will improve over time, but I decided to stick with Google’s webapp version. Just browse over to http://wave.google.com, accept the warning that your browser isn’t supported and you should see webapp version of Wave. At this point you can add it as a bookmark to the homescreen, giving you a nice Wave icon and remove those browser controls. It’s flakey but it quite useable.

I’m not sure what will come from Wave, it could be the next Gmail, or the next Orkut, either way it’ll be an interesting journey.

When no one sticks to them? After reading Alan’s post on 4×4s parked badly at Sainsburys, it reminded me of something that’s really got on my nerves lately, people that park in parent and baby spaces, that have no children with them, sometimes even be a work van!
The worst culprits seem to be found at Tesco Banbridge and although security have advised to complain to management, they claim it keeps happening and nothing is ever done long term to resolve it. What’s doubly frustrating is that Tesco have a parent and baby club which they get you to sign up to and in return, give you a “parking pass” of sorts to allow you to use these spaces. A good idea in principle, but I’ve never noticed anyone use them, but besides that, what’s the point of this scheme if it isn’t going to be enforced?

For me, it was a day bracketed by two very different experiences of customer service.

As most of us have noticed, the weather has taken a turn for the worse, and runways have been closed at many English airports for extended periods. The disruption seems worse than December – Easyjet cancelled 250 flights today! – though with fewer people trying to get home to families than at Christmas, travellers’ tales don’t seem so high in the media agenda?

Today was the first event in the much anticipated Out To Lunch Arts Festival which brightens up January. Robin Ince was due to appear at lunchtime. The familiar figure from Radio 4 shows like The News Quiz and Just A Minute as well as BBC Two’s Mock the Week and Never Mind the Buzzcocks was going to answer “Who was right, Orwell or Huxley? Are we amusing ourselves to death? Angry tirades, then quiet musings from one of the best brains in comedy.”

Instead the weather closed in and Robin Ince was stuck at Luton airport. Plans to get him across the night before were scuppered.

By noon I’d had an email, a message on Facebook (two, in fact) and a phone call to let me know that while the original show was cancelled and would be refunded. But the show must go on, and the festival had organised:

“a comedy performance with lunch today featuring local comedians at 1.00pm. This will be free of charge and you are most welcome to attend.”

Now that’s customer service. Organised, efficient, clear communications and still put on an event.

The three of us from work who’d been signed up for Robin Ince trudged through the fresh snow to the Black Box, collected our pasta bake and bread roll, and sat down to be entertained by local comedian Seamus Carabine (who’s from Boston via West Belfast) and a couple of musicians. In the circumstances, I guess it counted as alternative comedy.

Seamus learnt the hard way today that lunchtime gigs are even worse than he’d imagined. With a low level of alcohol and only five hours after breakfast, few people have an appetite for mass swearing that early in the day. You don’t get giggles for effing before seven o’clock at night.

In a routine littered with strange props – scales, toilet seats and a Bible – and with sick jokes about bulimics (pun his not mine), gay petrol bombers, women’s toilet habits and Ulster Scots paedophile vocabulary, the highlight was a fairly simple affair:

“My niece wanted an Nintendo for Christmas. She didn’t get it, but had a wee fit instead.”

Next came Tura Arutura, an African-Irish singer/guitarist, impromptu comic, and dancer extraordinaire. At one point it looked like he might break into The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

And to finish, Jonny Black, who’ll be back at the festival on Sunday 31 January, guest starring alongside The Bittersweets.

Hats off to Sean Kelly and his team for pulling off an impromptu gig at such short notice. Karl Spain shouldn’t have so many travel problems tomorrow. Have a look at the OTL10 website – you might find something to interest you during a Janurary lunchtime or evening.

Oh, and the very different experience of customer service. I ordered oil on Sunday, paid in advance to “be delivered within the the [sic] next three working days”. Their website says

“our experienced and friendly staff aim to give you the highest levels of customer service ensuring that you get your oil at the right price at a time that suits you.”

The price was ok, but the service and time leaves a lot to be desired. I normally use Hylands in Dundonald – they’ve never failed me. But this time I decided to use a local company. Big mistake.

Needless to say, no oil delivered on Monday. Nor Tuesday. Nor today. By teatime, we’d run out. Oil company’s answering machine message explains that they closed the office at lunchtime and weren’t able to get the tankers out to do deliveries. Not sure when they’re reopen. Their email address bounces back with an error.

They take an email address and a phone number from customers at order time, so there is no excuse for not phoning around to say that they wouldn’t meet their delivery promise.

The company? I’ll give them until tomorrow to redeem themselves and then I’ll name them. A reputation is too easily marred on the Internet.

Update – Thursday – I phoned Ian Martin Fuels this morning. My impression was that they weren’t too sympathetic, wouldn’t commit to being able to deliver today, and were under-impressed with my suggestion I would seek to reclaim the cost of the filling station emergency oil tubs from them as damages for breach of contract and not making any effort to agree to communicate their inability to meet the contract and agree a change to the three day delivery promise with me.

Their website front page talks about “if you order online, please allow one to three days for delivery” while their Payment and Delivery page says “we aim to deliver your oil within two working days of ordering“. The “online order received” email (post credit card payment) states “we are currently processing your request and your oil will be delivered within the the next three working days“. There are no other obvious terms and conditions.

And emails to sales@ianmartinfuels.com bounce back with:

—– The following addresses had permanent fatal errors —–
\sales.ianmartinfuels.com
(reason: 550 5.1.1 User unknown)
(expanded from: sales@ianmartinfuels.com

However, in their favour they did deliver the oil at half three this afternoon, only one day late. So they don’t get a whole blog post to themselves, but they do get a quick mention.
